How to Remove Powered by Shopify [Quick + Easy]

One of the quickest ways to boost your Shopify store’s professionalism is to remove the default ‘powered by Shopify’ text in the footer.

While Shopify is an excellent platform to build your eCommerce store, the default footer text may confuse some visitors. Especially if they have preconceptions about what Shopify is.

Thankfully, removing the ‘powered by Shopify’ text is super-simple (albeit not so intuitive for first-time store owners)

We’ve put together this step-by-step guide so you can quickly and easily whip away the unwanted footer text in under 2 minutes.

Let's go!

Do You Need to Remove Powered By Shopify?

Here at ReConvert, we love Shopify. It’s arguably the best ecommerce platform out there and takes the stress out of setting up an online business.

So it’s worth asking; why should you remove the ‘powered by Shopify’ branding at all?

Remover powered by shopify

The main reason is that eCommerce revolves around trust. Your goal should be to build rapport between your audience and your brand, not Shopify’s.

Having another brand slapped on top of your site can undermine buyer confidence. Especially if visitors aren’t fully versed in what Shopify actually is.

For example, a subset of folks may associate Shopify with low quality dropshipping stores or other unscrupulous businesses.

Other than that, the ‘Powered by Shopify’ text can also confuse your brand’s messaging.

Simply take a look at some of the biggest brands on Shopify, such as MVMT, Gymshark, and Everlane.

You won’t find Shopify branding within a country mile of these businesses because they understand the importance of delivering a pitch-perfect brand message.

Put simply, removing the default text makes your store look cleaner, boosts your professionalism, and obscures any negative sentiments consumers may have about Shopify.

So, without further ado, let’s roll up our sleeves and learn how to delete Shopify's shameless plug!

How to Remove ‘Powered by Shopify’

Some Shopify themes allow you to remove ‘Powered by Shopify’ by simply unchecking a box in your theme customizer.

If that’s you, happy days. If not, don’t worry. It only takes a couple of seconds.

Here’s how:

Step 1. Open Your Theme’s Code

  • Go to your Shopify dashboard.
  • In the left-hand column, under ‘Sales Channels,’ click ‘Online Store’ (This automatically selects the sub-section ‘Themes’.)
  • Navigate to your Live Theme (Debut in the GIF below), click ‘Actions,’ and from the dropdown menu, select ‘Edit Code
Step-1

Step 2. Locate The Relevant Code

Once you’ve opened your theme’s code, you’ll need to find the relevant section to edit.

  • In the left-hand pane, locate and click on the folder called ‘Sections
  • Scroll down until you find the sub-folder called ‘footer.liquid’.
  • Use the keyboard command ‘Ctrl + f’ to open the search function.
  • Type ‘powered’ into the search box to locate the section you want to edit.
Step-2

Step 3. Delete the Code You Don't Want

Now for the fun part!

  • Delete everything inside the curly brackets: {{ powered_by_link }}
  • You can leave the remainder of the code in place as it won’t affect anything.
  • Depending on what theme you have installed, you may have to delete more than one bit of code. Below you can see I’m using the Debut Theme, which has three bits of code I’ll need to remove.
  • Once you’ve removed all the {{ powered_by_link }} bits of code, click ‘Save’ in the top right corner, and Voila!
Step-3

Here’s a close-up view of the bits of code you need to delete in case it wasn’t clear from the GIF:

Now, jump back out of your theme editor and have a look at the footer of your store. As you can see in my example, it's a thing of beauty!

Alternative Method: Get Rid of ‘Powered by Shopify’ Without Coding

The above approach works perfectly pretty much every time. But if you’re adamantly against wrangling with code, there’s another approach you can try.

Here’s what to do:

Step 1. Open Languages

In the ‘Actions’ menu within the ‘Themes’ tab, choose ‘Edit languages’ (instead of edit code)

Edit languages

Step 2. Locate and Delete Powered by Shopify

  • On the language page, type ‘powered’ into the filter search box. This will display all of the “Powered by Shopify” texts on your website.
  • Add a single space to any of the boxes with greyed out text to remove them from your site.

Easy peasy, right?

While both methods get the job done in practice, we feel that method one is a little cleaner. However, if you’re super uncomfortable diving into the code, method two is a great alternative.
