What is a Post-Purchase Funnel?

A post-purchase funnel refers to the marketing that you do once a customer has bought from you.

The concept of a funnel is used because of the way you structure these post-purchase offers. You can guide customers to spend more by offering upsells, cross-sells, and downsells that change based on multiple conditions.

For example, if a customer buys a pair of shoes, you might use a trigger-based cross-sell to offer a pair of socks immediately post-purchase. If they accept your offer, you might try to sell them a protective shoe spray.

See how this kind of funnel can be immensely powerful?

In many definitions, this can mean everything from thank you page offers to email marketing and more.

However, for this article, we’re going to keep things simple: we’re just talking about the time from when your customer buys until the moment they land on your thank you page.

So, literally, when a customer purchases something, we’re going to immediately show them another offer or two (or three) before they hit the order confirmation page. 

Keeping your focus narrow like this, in the beginning, gives you the biggest wins for the least amount of effort. 

Once you’ve set up a simple post-purchase funnel, you can then add other marketing channels further down the line.

  • An initial trigger-based post-purchase offer to repurchase the same product with a small discount
  • A secondary post-purchase upsell or downsell that varies depending on whether the customer accepted or declined the first offer.
  • A customized thank you page with additional product recommendations, upsells, social sharing widgets, and more.

At this stage, you might be wondering, “how many post-purchase offers can I show my customers?”
