As a merchant, you know that the sweet sound of Shopify’s ‘ka-ching’ is hard to beat.
But what if you could turn every one of those ‘ka-ching’ into many ‘ka-chings’?
Well, that’s precisely what ReConvert’s new post-purchase funnel feature is here to help you do.
But now, it’s becoming even more powerful. We’re delighted to announce that after buckets of requests, we’ve added a post-purchase funnels feature to the app.
This feature allows you to design trigger-based, single-click, post-purchase offers that’ll drive your conversion rates (and profits) through the roof.
In this post, I’ll introduce you to these new features and show you how you can leverage them to turn one sale into many.
Ready? Post-purchase funnels, here we come!
What is a Post-Purchase Funnel?
A post-purchase funnel refers to the marketing that you do once a customer has bought from you.
The concept of a funnel is used because of the way you structure these post-purchase offers. You can guide customers to spend more by offering upsells, cross-sells, and downsells that change based on multiple conditions.
For example, if a customer buys a pair of shoes, you might use a trigger-based cross-sell to offer a pair of socks immediately post-purchase. If they accept your offer, you might try to sell them a protective shoe spray.
See how this kind of funnel can be immensely powerful?
In many definitions, this can mean everything from thank you page offers to email marketing and more.
However, for this article, we’re going to keep things simple: we’re just talking about the time from when your customer buys until the moment they land on your thank you page.
So, literally, when a customer purchases something, we’re going to immediately show them another offer or two (or three) before they hit the order confirmation page.
Keeping your focus narrow like this, in the beginning, gives you the biggest wins for the least amount of effort.
Once you’ve set up a simple post-purchase funnel, you can then add other marketing channels further down the line.
Seriously, don’t underestimate this type of micro-funnel.
There are several powerful psychological reasons why upselling and cross-selling directly after checkout works so well – let’s explore those now.
Why Do You Need a Post-Purchase Funnel?
The answer to this question is obvious – a post-purchase funnel allows you to maximize the immediate revenue from every single customer.
Genuinely, with ad costs on the rise, increasing your average order value is essential to keep things profitable.
So, if you can flip a $25 sale into a $50 sale with post-purchase offers, well, you just cleaned yourself a cool $25 extra in revenue.
Do that enough times across the board, and you’ll add serious muscle to your bottom line.
See, the thing about post-purchase upselling is this: they take less effort to set up and offer a higher ROI compared to almost every other type of marketing strategy.
Seriously, the psychological principle of consistency dictates that customers who’ve just bought from you are highly likely to do it again if you give them a chance. Especially if you make it enticing for them by offering relevant products with a juicy discount.
So, with that in mind, let’s look at how you can get started in a matter of minutes with your first revenue-pumping post-purchase funnel.
How to Use ReConvert to Build a Post-Purchase Funnel on Shopify
Look, running a store isn’t easy. We know because we’ve been there. We understand how many balls you need to juggle to keep your business afloat.
So when designing ReConvert, one of our main aims was to make set-up as simple as possible for merchants.
Here’s two ways to build a high-converting post-purchase funnel, starting with the easiest:
1. Use ReConvert’s Quick Activation Method
If you want minimum fuss setting up your post-purchase upsell funnel, then the quick activation method is for you.
With this approach, all you need to do is:
- Install ReConvert from the Shopify App Store
- Input the maximum % discount you’re prepared to offer
- Hit Publish
And we’ll take care of the rest. ReConvert will automatically build a post-purchase funnel with discounts designed to capture maximum revenue from shoppers.
Seriously, it’s that easy!
Using this method, you’ll leverage data analyzed from over 30,000 Shopify stores to create a funnel that works like clockwork.
This basic post-purchase funnel template looks like this in the funnel editor:
If that looks confusing, don’t worry. It simply consists of:
- An initial trigger-based post-purchase offer to repurchase the same product with a small discount
- A secondary post-purchase upsell or downsell that varies depending on whether the customer accepted or declined the first offer.
- A customized thank you page with additional product recommendations, upsells, social sharing widgets, and more.
We put a lot of effort into streamlining the onboarding flow for the app. Of course, you can still build out a funnel from scratch (which we’ll outline below). But if you’re keen to set and forget your post-purchase upselling, then ReConvert’s premade funnels will work a charm.
2. Build a Custom Post-purchase Funnel
You can also dig in and create a custom funnel that’s unique to your store.
Creating a custom funnel starts with choosing your triggers. Triggers allow you to get super specific and offer highly relevant offers.
For example, you can build post-purchase upsell flows based on data from your store. For example, you can show specific offers based on:
- Specific products
- Number of items in cart
- Cart value
- Product collections
- Customer’s billing/shipping address
- Previous order history and much more.
Next, you’ll want to set your offers. With ReConvert, a customer can see up to two different offers before they’ll land on your customized thank you page. Here’s what the offer builder looks like:
You can use these post-purchase offers to suggest suitable upsells and downsells. You can choose these products based on what you think works best or use our integration with Wiser to deploy AI-powered product suggestions.
You can also choose to display different offers based on whether or not the customer accepts or declines your one-click offer.
Here’s what your post-purchase upsells will look like to customers (ahem…without Ruth in the lower corner!):
At this stage, you might be wondering, “how many post-purchase offers can I show my customers?”
The answer is just two. The reason it’s limited to two offers is that any more will simply overwhelm your customers. For real, endlessly bombarding them with post-purchase offers will do more harm than good in the long run.
Once you’ve set your post-purchase offers, the next step is to design your custom thank you page. Again, we have a template called ‘conversion monster,’ which you can use here. But if you’d rather create your own, you can do that with the simple drag and drop editor.
What Else is New With ReConvert?
If you’re a long-time ReConvert user, we hope these changes aren’t triggering (excuse the pun).
But don’t worry, after listening to your guys, we’ve kept all of the most loved parts of ReConvert intact.
If you don’t want to use post-purchase funnels before your thank you page, you don’t have to! (Although, based on what we’ve seen so far, it’s hard to find a reason not to.)
One thing that’s changed is that we’ve stuck the analytics at the top of the dashboard so you can instantly see your results.
We’ve also replaced the old ‘triggers’ tan with the new ‘funnels’ tab, which helps you keep a keen eye on which funnels are performing best.
ReConvert as a thank you page builder is just as effective as it ever was. However, when you add the funnels feature alongside the thank you page builder, you get the most potent post-purchase upsell app on the market.
There’s no reason why you can’t start using the new ReConvert today to deliver a better post-purchase experience for your customers and a healthier bottom line for you.
